I’ve been playing Tears of the Kingdom in Dutch as language practice. When it first came out — you know how when you let a sign fall, Addison is like “oh nooo, something unforgivable has happened”? — I had to look up the word he used in Dutch. And then I thought “wow, uh, maybe I’m misunderstanding something, but that word sounds kind of severe for this context.” But no, I checked with my partner, I wasn’t misunderstanding.
The Dutch text had “ontuchtig,” which means contemptible in the way that sexual crimes are contemptible. It read like this man was explicitly comparing the sign falling over to sexual assault.
A few weeks after the game came out, that silently got patched. He says “unforgivable” in the most straightforward way now. I assume the localizer was not fully salient of the context the line would be used in until it was too late to fix before shipping.
