making various contingency plans lately for what to do depending on how the presidential election goes this year. hoping I can get my German citizenship so we can more easily move to the EU to prevent the fascists from trying to kidnap my child because I'm trans, which is one of my biggest fears atm for the near future

thanks good luck to you too! yeah Germany is at least our short-term best bet I think.. currently we're trying to get me + baby German citizenship via the current legal window to get it if you only lack it due to previous sexist laws (my grandmother was a German citizen but German law at the time of my mom's birth said you could only get it from your father). if that works out we'd be able to live anywhere in the EU potentially but Germany seems likeliest to work out wrt housing etc too

Ireland would be another top choice but apparently they have a really bad housing shortage, but in other ways it would be better like wrt language since my wife is training to be a nurse and eventually midwife, and having to learn another language to the level of proficiency necessary for healthcare work would take longer

Sounds like you have a good plan! I'm really glad that Germany has a right of return.

For us, my wife has professional connections over there and we have a baseline knowledge of the language so, if we have to move then that's probably where we'll end up

If you are looking to learn German, I really recommend Babble and Pimslur. Babble is really worth the money and Pimslur is easy enough to steal lol
