mystery cults were a common type of organization in ancient greece and rome. they often had elaborate initiation rites, and imported some aspects of ancient egyptian and near eastern religions.
in particular i'm interested by the cult of dionysus, which focused on doing a bunch of drugs and then dancing while loud music played, in an attempt to bring people closer to their pure animal nature. i feel like i uh know a bunch of bay area trans girls who would be super down to join that cult.
