ive been thinking a lot about digital my processes for making art is, and how much that makes me feel more disconnected with the physical space i live in when so much of my time is spent actively not interacting with it in any capacity. i was In A Mood a few days ago when i ran those pics thru sean's ordered dither maker and i've been really feeling like i need to make something stupid simple, weird and goofy, that's games but also using as much sampled from the real world as possible

there was a gif i saw years ago (i think by stuffed wombat?) of a little sprite character running around a photo that had been cut up into layers to make them look like they were actually inside the scene. the stylistic contrast was stark and looked SO COOL and i'd like to do something like that sometime, but i was up thinking about it till 3am and came up with something that would feel incredibly therapeutic to make, but i wouldn't be able to release it publicly

i want a point and click adventure that uses only the arrow keys for everything (left/right to turn in those directions, up to do the context action, and down to do misc shit), where the player character is this weird fucked up little guy who's dealing with seasonal depression and just trying to get through it as warm fall becomes cold fall and everything gets more bleak and cold. i want to be able to walk up and down the streets and alleyways of my neighbourhood and hide weird little things there, and put characters in the spaces to talk to about the coming winter. i want to go out and take lots of pictures of the spaces, record the sounds for the ambiences, and focus on lots of little details

unfortunately in order to make everything feel kinda cohesive and not have to worry about doing any more photo editing than i have to, i need to make sure i'm taking pictures of all the places i need to while we're in that middle zone where the leaves have all fallen, the skies should be grey and overcast, but before the snow or the rain starts coming to change how things look. which means i need to have all the spaces and objects i need to take pictures of be planned out in advance, and then reserve an ideal day to go out and take all those pictures. looking ahead, i might be able to do this on tuesday when it's gonna been a bit since the last rain/snow while still being cloudy? either way i think i'm gonna start planning this weird little fucked up adventure thing right after work tonight and vaguepost about it to whatever degree lets me show things without doxxing myself lmfao

woke up this morning and it was shitty and grey out which was perfect for taking pictures for this but i hadn't actually done any actual production work of figuring out what i wanted pictures of and where, so i planned that out a bunch before going out to take pictures but by the time i was ready to go, the sun had come out 😔

so i made these mockups instead and did some more planning and decided to cut out all the streets and stick solely to alleyways since it'll be like 16 panoramic shots per alleyway plus anything interesting i'd like to take pictures of which is a LOT. i wanna do like 12 alleyways and a couple other individual spots which is gonna take a hot long while, but at least now i'm ready for next weekend when it'll be bleak and grey again

in reply to @celechii's post:

there are so many things i want to do that involve navigating pictures of my neighbourhood and i think i'm gonna try and do another one in a different style once the snow comes to stay, like in january or something

I was always tempted to make art set in real-world streets by taking stuff from random strange places in Google Street View, but I could never shake the feeling that whoever happens to live there would see it and get freaked out

that's so fair, def gonna be removing all street names, house numbers, license plates, faces, etc but the whole thing's gonna be bit crushed and dithered so it feels less like capturing specific details and more just making weird art with it as a base i guess

yeah!! im so hyped that the biggest part of it feels like just going out and taking the pictures and recording the sounds but im intentionally not doing anything special with them, it's gonna look and sound janky as hell so i don't have to stress over making anything look or feel polished unless i really want to :)

that's good!!! it reminds me of one of my first game projects for a flatjam where i drew all the assets by hand.. scanning them and then putting the game together was a lot of fun!! i think these lil experiences are worth it just for how good the craft feels
