ive been floating around this idea of drawing small 25-30 page romance comics for the past week, inspired by all the romance anime ive been watching and the handful of comics ive been reading recently.

i want to get back into the practice of drawing, i want to indulge my love of romance (lol) and want to work on smaller projects than games that i can start and finish in like a month and have a much lower quality bar to meet. so much about what i love about making games is writing really good, quality code. but there's just so much that goes into games that even small ones take so, so long, and doing half assed programming doesn't bring me any joy.

but comics!! i also love every part of making comics but god damn are they so much less work than games. i haven't sat down to work on a comic in the last 6 years while ive been going really hard with games, so im really outta practice which brings me so much relief. i focused on comics for like 5 years as hard as i have with games, but i've gotten enough distance from it that i feel like i can take this on purely as thing for myself to enjoy. my first comics are more than likely going to suck and not be shown anywhere but are primarily going to serve as practice starting and finishing them and learning from the process to get better for the next one!

something i've gotten a lot better at thanks to games is the production side of things, where i can better keep things within a scope that i can actually achieve with what i have at the moment. from making comics previously i know somewhat my bad tendencies ahead of time and have come up with a bunch of restrictions and tools already to keep it small and compact! they are

  • hard maximum of 30 pages
  • everything freehanded with one of 3 pen sizes (6px for text/details, 8px for most lineart, 12px for panel boarders and help with fills since im not using the fill tool and just embracing scribbliness)
  • no rulers tho guides are ok
  • handwritten text (this might change but i wanna do it for my first comic to keep word count down and maybe improve my handwriting lol)
  • no colouring, everything done with just the black pens

hopefully all this will encourage me to just make things fast and not end up spending forever on each page making it look just right cause it's gonna look a bit jank no matter what. anyways that's the plan and im v excited to have already started the ball rolling on it! im gonna get better at drawing comics, better at writing romance, and better at finishing things! hopefully lmao
