this is something that i noticed in strive (which fighting games have prolly done for actual decades but i wouldn't know cause idk anything about older fighting games) is that when you attack, your character gets sorted on top of your opponent so u can see the connection point clearly!
ive had this in my backlog for ages cause for some reason i remember thinking that this could be something complicated or tricky/annoying to keep track of in the simulation, but it turns out i just dont need to keep track of it in the simulation! u dont really care abt the specifics of who's in what order until u render the frame, so everyone just goes "put me on top!" when they want to and then it sorts those requests taking time and priority into account and just increments their sorting order! the simulation doesn't need to know shit about it lmao
