As someone who primarily played in 2009-2013, I'm amazed at evo 2023 entrant numbers vs what im used to

So, evo 2010-2014 numbers were usually about these:

SF4: around 1500-2000
bb/gg: 500-1000
tekken: 300-500
nethereralms games: 200-500
mvc3: 1200
kof: 500

Now, evo 2023:

sf6: 7000
ggstrive: 2500
tekken: 1500
umvc3: 1300
dbfz: 800
kof5: 666 (!)
melty blood: 500
mk11: 450

SF6 has 7 fucking thousand! Thats more than the total attendants of any of those cited previous EVOs, and for some its more than double!

GG Strive has more entrants than literally any game pre-2015! That's fucking amazing- non-capcom games were significantly mocked and sidelined back then, and now one eclipses anything from that era.

Tekken grew threefold!

Melty has more entrants than almost any non-capcom non-smash game in 2009-2014!

Its just really cool to see as someone who came back after 10 years, especially for arcsys stuff.

Also, if anyone whines about an EVO 2023 mainline game being "dead", command grab them because they're having suuuch a warped perspective, lol.

it is pretty incredible. I only very casually played or paid attention to fighting games and only watched competition clips here and there. After a false start with GGST, SF6 finally got me into the genre hard and what a time to get into it. Seeing all of these games in competition is making me want to try so many more games too. I will eventually give GGST another shot, but I also wanna try King of Fighters and Melty Blood. It's awesome!

Granblue could be a good fit too since that's basically in between SF6 and Strive(neutral and power level and damage design somewhat more like sf6, but charas have weapons and more unique gameplay designs more like strive), although wont have rollback until Rising

I should try KOF15 since it supposedly doesnt have things I hate about KOF13 and i can play terry like im in 2002um, heh

Oh yes! I got the current Granblue Fantasy Versus when it was on sale to try it out. I need to actually make some time for that. The new version looks good!

King of Fighters 15 seems like a good option for team-based fighting without going as hard as Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. I'm also considering Dragonball Fighter Z.

What did you not like about King of Fighters 13? I don't know much about the games themselves.

The main thing was the damage design in KOF13- if you had a couple rounds of meter, you could do use Hyperdrive Mode to easily do 60%+ damage, or even 80%+ with more meter.

But a lot of things also didnt lead into HD combos- the most concerning of which was anti airs.

If someone jumped in on me, I could anti air them for like 7%. But if they hit me, they could probably HD and do 10 times as much. It was really distorted.

I would love first rounds in the game where you have like no meter and so damage made sense, but then it just got worse and worse as meter warps the game.

The execution aspect was also annoying- its hard to remember, but there were issues with input reader and command designs(such as overlapping commands), and so execution requirements for HD combos could be quite tough depending on the character.

Game was utterly beautiful and the core of neutral and pressure was iirc quite good, but damage/meter design just really killed it for me.
