is a new SNES song that i just submitted to battleofthebits "Summer Chip XIV"!

the submission deadline was approaching and i was kind of irked cause there were a few ideas circling in my mind and i spent the majority of the time thinkin about which one i wanted to do so i was like "mannn freak it" and i decided to just write anything at a late night. i ended up just pulling from all these different ideas and exploring each of them throughout the song. i also was like "lol i should put a dolphin in there" and so i did and i was quite happy about it. the section before the last chorus (the 1000 chord fast drum part) was probably the most challenging part for me. i don't think i've made something as intense before and i was frequently stuck on where to go harmonically, but through much trial and error it worked out! it is def my favorite part of the tune

though it's been almost a year since my last kirby attempt, i've still yet to really dive in to kirby music. dreamland 3's "Hyper Zone 1/2" remains a classic for me but as i looked through the rest of the soundtrack i was "whoooaahhhh". there is so much variety in this stuff. part of the reason i chose to title the song as a "bootleg kirby" was because this ended up more like a cent song with kirby samples than a kirby pastiche. all this to say: i really want to play a bunch of kirby games right now.

there were also new kinds of effects/CC's i used in the song. usually for songs made with c700 i (for some reason) am reluctant to use midi CC's. this time though i was changing up the attack, decay, volume, and other stuff throughout the song and it felt so freeing. i shall be bringing some more Control to future SNES songs.

thank you damifortune for the hardware render!

recent kapustin pastiches have made me go "holy crap i've got to try and imitate nikolai kapustin" and so yesterday i did. it was really fun to do it with some sim city samples and i'm pretty happy with it. it was also awesome to revisit a couple of my fav kapustin pieces for reference: Prelude no. 23 (op. 53) and the first mvmnt. of Trio for piano, cello, and flute (op. 86).

the song is called "the egg and you" and the game is called eggletopia. you can hatch eggs that contain little creatures and you can take care of them and have them play little minigames and stuff!
it has been a while since i made a long ass song (wow 4 minutes) but it was super fun to make something silly and samba-y like that again. it was cool to express mi inspirations (tony thai, virt, kiyoshi sugimoto, maoki yamamoto) while showing off how i developed since "silly billy coast". this was also the first song where i actually took out a notepad and took note of keys i've already visited while making it lolol.
this is my first commission and i think the process went really well! good communication and the commissioner was cool and nice and let me have a lot of freedom during making it. it was fun to share all the wips and stuff with them.

here is a link to the webgame. you can listen to this song and many other awesome ones in the background: https://eggbert.ca/eggletopia

also here is the song!
