The reason video game soundtracks have surpassed movie scores as “iconic”, in the sense that earlier Hollywood films were, is because the current film production system makes that sort of scoring more difficult it integrate (see: The Marvel Symphonic Universe), while games can afford to lean into it since timing is less important as player agency interferes with “editing” anyway.

I genuinely want to hear thoughts on this take because I’m a dummy but it feels like this hypothesis has legs and someone’s probably already discussed it out there.
