Well I had to mute it. Because it was starting to annoy me a lot.

Like a lot a lot.

See, I'm an artist by trade. And I require eyes on my work. And I did comment earlier about how it felt like posting art on cohost is a little...weird? Visibility and discoverability on this site is, frankly, kind of bad unless you have an existing audience and while people may come out of the woodwork and say "but that's how it's always been".

Yeah. It has. And it's always sucked.

But on cohost it's a little more acute because of the lack of visible likes and the complete lack of an actual algorithm. These are deliberate; this avoids the numbers game aspect of cohost. Which is great. I actually love that part.

However in place of the algorithm which funnels people towards content you are kind of left to the whims of people who follow you, who are kind of trained to uh...not respond.

Like I'm about ready to mute likes on my notification feed because right now shares are what matter for getting eyes on work. And while the staff, as beleaguered as they be, do want to implement some kind of system for artists to keep track of it, it is frankly a bad experience to be posting art here right now.

On tumblr I can see work I posted months ago get circulated. On Cohost, I hardly, if ever, see that same kind of return. I don't understand what it takes to get anything to circulate and it's frustrating.

And it is why I silenced the Scott Steiner Math Shitpost because as funny as it was in the moment, I saw how many shares it got compared to my art.

I saw how much attention it got compared to my art.

Please for the love of god, if you see an artist posting work and you FOLLOW THEM, please just share it. Hell spam those shares. FUCK, spam comments!

Like actually please try to spread that around.

cohost is a website that I really, really want to like but there's some little quirks and issues with it that I hope to see ironed out or at least reconsidered. I'm not even sure how to start with artist visibility but at least right now I can ask people to please share.

stuff like this makes me wonder if not having any kind of "algorithm" is actually a good thing :/ cohost's current design makes it a constant uphill battle to try and get any kind of visibility, and it's infuriating if you actually want to have some kind of reach like many other social media spaces have had.

the privacy and safety benefits are undeniable. but surely there's a good middle ground we could achieve? something opt-in maybe?

I think what might need to be done is maybe some kind of rec. Like the biggest issue with the algo tends to be how inscrutable it is and how, yeah, it's mandatory. So hmmm...it's a weird and complicated problem

I don't think so, its just that a place is needed where all the posts the entire site are accessible. Searches, tags, suggested topics and accounts, anything that would help people connect with the content they want

Same honestly, I was posting my book I've been writing on here, and I just never got ANY response unless I made a completely different post that got a bit of momentum (like my star ocean rant). At least when I posted on Reddit I got some kind of response; here though I get diddly squat. It's really disheartening.

It's fucking draining. I posted the Grimm and Sons art and got nothing. I post art regularly and get crickets. I don't get it.

I think it's just due to the kinds of people who are browsing co-host right now. It's mostly HIGHLY technical nerds, and/or furrys, both of which I am not. So if you want actual momentum, you have to post under one of those two umbrellas, and I'm gonna be honest. I don't like either of those I'm umbrellas, so idk what to do.
