This is why I like The Venture Bros so much. When they reference something, it's not the joke. The joke is built around references but isn't just "Hey remember that thing?"
yeah Venture Bros is a pretty great example of humorous writing that doesn't just go "aha, look at that, that's so funny isn't it?"
i know good writing is deeply undervalued in the indie games space because everyone is a programmer or an artist and nobody ever hires writers to actually write their stories and scripts, but we have to do better than 2009-tier gag writing in 2023. please just try a little bit.
