pangaea
@pangaea

i normally post these right as the month ends but i didnt really feel like getting around to it until now and i still feel lacking in articulate thoughts on a lot of this music, tried to finish it up though

Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead

checked this out because Gil Sharone worked with The Dillinger Escape Plan and i wanted to see what his other work sounded like. this didnt disappoint. extremely theatrical but with tons of fun groovy drumming and bass playing. the screamed vocals on the opening track are ridiculously good

Victory Over The Sun - Nowherer

black metal in 17EDO tuning, its great. the opening track has one of the most addictive melodies ive heard in the genre. i dont have much to add other than that, if you like black metal, and ESPECIALLY if you like Jute Gyte, you will like this

Oneohtrix Point Never - Magic Oneohtrix Point Never

more OPN, i've heard this one before but it took me a long time to finally get it. feels like driving down an endless highway to me. really interesting unique production as usual, the Cross Talk interludes add a lot of atmosphere. Imago feels like something from Replica which i always love hearing more of. Answering Machine is extremely overwhelming

The Armed - These Are Lights

i thought i had listened to everything from The Armed but it turns out they have an older album not on bandcamp. its a decent debut. Party At Pablos, Kingbreaker, and Buy A Snake are all bangers but the album overall just feels like a slightly less inventive and vicious form of their later EPs and Untitled. not disappointed with it but i will say its probably only worth a listen if youre finished with the rest of their discography and need more

Extra Life - Secular Works Vol. 1 & Vol. 2

crazy unique album. ive never heard anything like it. medieval sounding stuff but with ridiculously weird rhythms. i can see the vocals being extremely polarizing because theyre so clean and the melodies feel like they could be grating, but i think they act as a great contrast to the instrumentals once you get used to them. definitely worth a listen if youre feeling open to something you might not like immediately. I Don't See It That Way is a song ive been going back to constantly this month. volume 2 is a comeback after like 10 years but its more of the same, which is still something extremely unique

Meshuggah - Nothing

i love Nothing but i had only heard the rerecorded version until now. i think i like the original even more, the bass sounds fantastic, the vocals are more raw, the drums all sound clearer and more punchy aside from the snare which is toned down. hard to decide which is my favorite because both are incredible but i think this one manages to feel better to me

Pupil Slicer - Blossom

i was really excited for this albums release but it took me a while to get around to it. i liked it but i dont really have much to say other than i think i preferred the direction of Mirrors. it's still a solid mathcore release but it doesnt really capture my attention the way the last album did, going to try and give it a few more listens and see if i develop a taste for it though

GEE TEE - Chromo-Zone

laid back punk EP with some synth melodies that are both silly and very pretty. i have a soft spot for "cheap" sounding synthesizers being a big fan of pilotredsun

Pinback - Blue Screen Life

more pinback, trying to go through this bands entire discography. so far ive really liked everything, (though a genre i dont explore much) this is easily my new favorite indie rock band. love all the beautiful guitar melodies and rob crow is one of the best vocalists ive heard in the genre. the last verse of Concrete Seconds has been stuck in my head a lot lately

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull

this is really good, basically my first Earth album (aside from listening to bits of Earth 2) and it set a great atmosphere. its an hour of cowboy music
