doing my parasite eve piano tutorial made me honestly call back to when sample-driven game soundtracks used SO much fun lofi sampled percussion in their tracks
like listen to Missing Perspective in the other track & take note of the cool crunchy perc sounds. and they were all over the place, especially when hitoshi sakimoto was involved:
all that stuff going on in the left channel during the intro... the wild clashing at 1:20
the breathy sounds in the left channel (he loves that left channel for weird percussion)... the crunchy slams as the percussion gets going. the intense perc at 1:50
by the time we get to FFXII we've got higher fidelity samples, but the same energy is there... the percussion carries this track so hard, it rules
anyway i think about that a lot. we love a lot of orchestral wank in the modern era of game soundtracks, but percussion is such an important part of arrangement that needs love
