@TrashBoatDaGod asked:

I first found out about you as the dev of Bullet Witch. How's that project going? Hope it's not too stressful on top of everything else.

i wish i made Bullet Witch; i would have probably made it a slightly better game! [audience laughter]

jokes aside, yes! i'm the designer, scenario writer, artist and composer for Bullet Sorceress. it's kinda hard to say "how" the project has been going -- i had to pick up some contract work about two years ago (around a few months after the time i had started developing the core ideas, aesthetic, mechanics, and story), which very quickly ramped up and pretty much became the only thing i've had time to do since then. obviously all of the pandemic stuff certainly hasn't helped...

luckily, with my work wrapping up very soon, i'll be right and ready to fly right into the good shit again! i'm actually really, really looking forward to getting back to it and showing it to folks again.

i haven't been dead in these last two years though; while i haven't had the time or energy to work on the art (which largely amounts to tilesets, enemies, and cutsenes) or the core game design (at least of which i had mostly finished before i had to step away anyways), i've been pretty immersed into the general "universe" that i've created for the game, doing a ton of writing, re-writing, backstory, and fun little lore bits, as well as further developing and fleshing out the characters of the game itself, and drawing up little concepts and ideas for bosses, modes, and the like. i think the forced time away has actually been pretty good for the project as a whole, as it's something that i really believe people are going to enjoy now!

hopefully i haven't just created pie-in-the-sky expectations for myself or others haha, but i think it's just a general sign that game development has become something very exciting and inspiring for me again, after a long drawn-out period of "development goes great -> something in life goes horribly wrong -> long delay of no development -> things get better -> development -> ..." making it hard to stay motivated and as productive as we would like.

i guess to summarize, the concepting and structure of the game has been going great, despite the design and art having been on hold for a while due to other things getting in the way, and you will all see a lot more about what's going on in the Bullet Sorceress-verse very soon. everyones' patience and understanding has been an essential pillar in keeping us going under even the greatest challenges, and it will be rewarded with fruit in time; ideally in 2024. ā¤ļø

after four weeks of intense multitasking between my commission work and my creative work, i'm happy to finally say that our game jam project has borne fruit. i'll make a formal announcement on @DNGRHRT when it's fully ready for release, but expect it within this coming week!

this is Around the World in 180 Seconds, Starring Mia & Maria! this is a title art WIP that i've been working on off and on for the last few days; still got a few things to clean up but we'll see how much of that i can fit in before the jam officially wraps up tomorrow. :)

i rarely post art i'm working on online, so here's to changing that!

in my continuing effort to Stay Organized i've started really getting into the habit of writing down my plans, as well as writing in my planner whenever i accomplish anything. i think that physical act of writing down my accomplishments helps keep me focused AND reminds me that even when i "think" i haven't gotten anything done in a while, i have concrete evidence that some effort was made.

so that being said;

  • job work, polishing up the jump & landing animation for the boss i'm working on, starting on effects and keyframes for her attack animations. (unfortunately i will not be posting any of it as i am under NDA.)
  • Sorceress STG work; mostly focusing on final assets, character designs, and rough drafts for the stages that are left to be done. i got really caught up trying to make sure the stuff in there was 100% perfect to my vision, but i know my vision is subject to change as time goes on, so i should prioritize getting stuff like draft maps done for the other stages first.
  • more Sorceress VN work -- i've been real excited to flesh this one out and do more with the characters in the universe, stuff i wouldn't be able to get away with in the shmup. plus it's kinda fun doing something new. :)

happy thursday!

i started working on a little visual novel to give myself something fun and unique to practice, it's been a really nice way to take a break from my full-time pixel work that's been eating up most of my actual game development time.

it's also been nice to think more about the actual characters and backstories in Bullet Sorceress while i design things for the main game itself in the background.

i'm looking forward to working on this more :)
