I'm kinda feeling myself being ... maybe scared isn't the right word but sorta drifting away in an unsure sense from adventure bike riding

like, the first bike you get rarely is the one you stay with. Almost all adventure bikes are huge both in size, height, and mass, and i'm not like some beef sergal over here, i'm still a bit small, so i'm not afraid but I do question the wisdom of jumping into a behemoth like a Tenere 700 or something

i'm not exactly new to bikes. I floundered miserably with some motocross bikes my brother got into when we were younger, and maybe that's the other half of it, that i should probably get used to regular roads first and not the shitty backcountry i grew up in so like maybe a Rebel 300 is okay for now for a smol sergal like me

i am absolutely pleased wizh my decision to get a smaller bike as my first (duke 390) and zhough i do have big adventure plans, i don't feel like i'm missing out or anyzhing so highly recommend zhe rebel for now

Common mistake adventure riders do is buy too much bike if you want to seriously take it off road. Hell, I even think the 390 is too heavy and plan to eventually replace it with a 690 (50 lbs lighter lol) once I pay it off more.

I know we chatted already, and freeway speed is a concern. I always recc a dual sport if you are trying to bias more towards offroad, but they are a lot less capable on long stretches of freeway.

i do have this amusing image in my head of smaller rider + bigger bike even if it is an extra challenge; i tend to like a challenge. Spouse suggested the KTM 790 ADV but I sat on one and it was a long way down lol, maybe some other time tho it isn't a thumper like the 390 is

we shall see, but for now it's prolly best to stay close to the ground

790 and 890 are also sweet, but yeah they’re HEFTY. But the tank design on em is really good so it puts a lot of weight down low.

Seat height on offroad bikes is tricky, as there aren’t a ton of options for short ppl lol (same boat). Eventually you get used to it though. Riding my EXC with a 36” seat height while I have a 30” inseam has made me pretty good at dealing with not being able to touch the ground haha.

I have sat on some good-feeling street bikes but idk the aesthetic doesn't vibe with me a lot of the time. Scrambler-types seem to be a good compromise between street and off-road; not exactly full dual-sport but also not afraid of the dirt, and not towering giants, either.

I hate that I'm so hard to shop for, lol.
