I always let out a sigh of relief when a Youtube video I'm watching has proper like, non-automatic closed captioning. Especially if it actually matches what they're saying and is free of mistakes or inconsistencies with the actual spoken words, (usually happens when Youtubers paste their script into the caption, but didn't stick to it too strongly for the VO) or jokes that mess with the script. (I don't personally mind stuff like describing a sound in a silly way, but there's a limit, man)
I know it's a pain in the ass to do from experience, but trust me, the work is greatly appreciated by those who it matters for.
I just can't express how fucking awful and useless autogenerated captions are for almost everything, save for maybe people doing transatlantic accents, oddly enough.
The WORST THING is when the captions are, like, an "extra voice" making random comments/jokes about what the person on the video is saying. Like wow, thanks! This is worse than useless! It's distracting and awful!
This (very long) video has some of my favorite captions, as it does both a great job transcribing the dialogue, narration, and other audio cues, but at some point emojis are added to the end of a line of dialogue. It works as a tone indicator BUT ALSO they are very funny.
