It is very cool and fun to do!!!! And you should absolutely do it to ensure that you get to SAVE (that's the name of the plan) then you can get all the obmna soda your little heart desires
- Log in to the student aid website https://studentaid.gov/aid-summary It's the "log in" button in the upper right corner
- Now go to this page!!!! and scroll down to look at your loans (you might have to make the thing expand). It will say what plan it is enrolled in. If it says it's in the REPAYE plan or the SAVE plan, then you're all good! You have nothing else to do! But if it's in something else, we got work to do! It's just a lot of clicking don't worry
- You now need to pick the right student loan repayment plan. Go to this URL https://studentaid.gov/idr and fill it out. Say you're not going to do a perjury, tell them where you live, etc. The two most importantest bits of data is your income AND how many people are in your household. This is the IRS definition of "household," which means the number of people who are financially dependent on you for 51% of more of stuff (so children, family members, spouses etc). It doesn't mean roommates/housemates. The income you can have imported straight from the IRS, so you might have to also log in to the IRS and say "yes I allow the FAFSA guys to look at my data."
- You will end up on a page with a bunch of different plans and with numbers. There's monthly payment (green box'd), the total amount you'll pay over the plan, the date of the last payment, and how much will be forgiven. This is not going to be a "$10,000 will magically be removed from your balance" thing, but more of a "well, you've been repaying us for X years, so we're just gonna write off the rest of it" deal. So you COULD pay all of it off before the pay off date, if you so wish. But no one is making you do that.
- Select the plan and then do the last few pages.
- And now....to wait.... Take a screenshsot back in step 4, so you have a record of this stuff (they will probably also email it to you and maybe mail it, too) so that when payments start back up in October, you will know if the numbers line up.
I think this is really fun and cool and I was not expecting this much money to be forgiven (and also my payment will now be less than it was pre-covid lol).
There's supposed to be even more stuff kicking in in June? 2024, but get into the SAVE plan as soon as you can! Don't pay more money than you have to!!!
The main method of customer service contact for these guys is supposed to be on the phone, but that's gonna suck super hard, so try to do it online, if you can. But it's very easy! I don't know how optimized it is for mobile, so make a trip over to the library if you need to (or borrow a friend's laptop). Or do it at work like I did lol.
