revisiting this because i've learned more about css animate in subsequent posts. it works because despite what the keyframes for spin say to do, if you instead provide your own parameters for translate your settings will take precedent and allow it to animate in entirely different ways than intended. (even if my two newer posts are in fact just different kinds of spinning objects)
