the "most decisive" naval battle of the Civil War: two invulnerable pieces of shit engage each other at dawn, blast each other with cannon at point blank range for hours, inflict insignificant damage on each other despite the CSS Virginia (triangle) taking 97 hits and the USS Monitor (circle) taking 22, and then retreat with both sides claiming victory, each having misinterpreted the other as giving up, accomplishing nothing. later the Monitor would sink due to being exposed to weather while in the ocean, and the Virginia would be burnt down and exploded by the Confederates because it was too stupid to do anything or go anywhere, but they couldn't let the Union forces have it

The Northern-built Merrimack, a conventional steam frigate, had been salvaged by the Confederates from the Norfolk navy yard and rechristened the Virginia.

Confederate submarines were hilariously good at killing everyone but the target, especially the crew. Naval warfare of the american civil war is peak.
Was it all subs or just that one that had 100%+ crew casualty rate, including the inventor?
The CSS Hunley, at the time the #1 most effective submarine in the world, sinking itself three times to sink one enemy vessel and killing 21 of it's own 8-person crew in exchange for 5 enemy sailors.
The funniest part to me is how it gave a lot of Very Serious naval people completely, catastrophically wrong ideas about how iron ships would work
I mean, it's not like this was the only thing that led people to think guns were on the way out, there was also this thing in the Adriatic for one, but they did manage to make ironclads look a lot more invincible than they really were all the same.

That's interesting - was this just an arms race dead-end which both sides had stumbled into?
This is probably one of my favorite Civil War Battles purely because at some point in the engagement I think Monitor's turret jams and can't traverse more than like 30 degrees. From there I think a few crew are scrambling above deck to try to fix the jam, prompting musket fire from Virginia's crew which naturally doesn't do much of anything.
Imagine the ship being so impervious to meaningful damage while also needing repairs to the point that people are doing borderline Battlefield 3 Shenanigans and still not accomplishing anything. I think there's talk of ramming or boarding Monitor that goes nowhere because it's too fast compared to Virginia, it's very much slapstick.
