Recap for anyone confused:

  • the mario maker 1 servers are about to shut down. a project was undertaken to identify every uploaded level that had never been beaten by anyone (uploads were already frozen a while back) and collectively beat every single last one of them
  • we were down to two especially difficult levels: the last dance and trimming the herbs
  • last dance is cleared
  • hundreds of thousands of attempts are made at trimming the herbs
  • the original level designer breaks down and publicly admits he had beaten it by connecting an arduino to the controller. it was meant to be an experiment with getting TAS working, he didn’t anticipate this situation seven years later
  • the community recategorizes trimming the herbs as illegitimate (alongside levels known to use glitches, which can become literally impossible once the glitches are patched), meaning the last dance was retroactively the final clear
  • there’s a lot of disappointment because this means everyone missed their chance to celebrate the moment of the final clear, a cold and broken hallelujah sort of situation
  • some absolute god proceeds to clear trimming the herbs anyway with mere hours left before the server shutdown

I have no idea what's happening in this video but I know it was the last mario maker 1 level left undone and I think the deadline to finish it was getting close?

Here’s what happened:

IMO it’s good. It’s not fair to anyone to pose a challenge under the premise “clearly at least one human beat this to validate the upload, therefore it’s definitely possible” when actually an arduino beat the level. It could very well have been literally humanly impossible. The fact that someone did manage to beat it anyway is just all the more beautiful in light of the knowledge that the level was designed to an arduino’s tolerances, not a human hand

? I think the word “early” may be misleading you, this was “about a week ago, after hundreds of thousands of attempts had already been made on the level and it was widely suspected to be cheated somehow”. it only got beaten because a handful of the absolute best players in the world kept grinding at it no matter what
