I've seen 50 movies this year (and only three were gay erotica!). Here's the five that are sticking most:

The Farewell (2019) : Truly one of my new favorite movies about family. It's really good at holding the tension of "I feel like I'm about to cry" right up until the end, and when you finally get that resolution crying is only one of a number of ways you want to express your relief of the tension. I'm genuinely excited to see this again someday.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) : This is the only rewatch on this list, with a 14 or 15 year gap in between. I've been coming to terms with the idea that Anderson may be my favorite director, especially since Asteroid City. Adrien Brody is perfect in this.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) : This was a complete surprise; I knew absolutely nothing about it going in, including how it ended up on my watchlist in the first place. Catherine Deneuve's performance is perfectly heartwrenching, and I was captivated with the set pieces in ways I'm not sure I could iterate.

Murder on the Orient Express (1974) : I've been reading more Christie-esque mysteries lately and it occurred to me that I hadn't really actually interacted with Christie directly. Hercule Poirot is a bit of a challenge to have as the primary POV character, but the acting from Vanessa Redgrave and Lauren Bacall more than makes up for it.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) : For me this has maybe been the most challenging watch (gender is a fuck, as they say), but it's been on my mind ever since. I found it fascinating, erotic, alien. I would absolutely come back to this, but in a group setting with people I felt comfortable talking about sex openly.

Honorable Mentions:
The Great Muppet Caper // After Yang // It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World // Dicks: The Musical // Hundreds of Beavers // Challengers // The Art of Self-Defense // Portrait of a Lady on Fire // Problemista

since june 23rd my number of movies watched has gone up to 94 (number of gay erotica: 10.5)
here's what would probably make the list if we were able to be here in december:

Chicago (2002) : This edition's only rewatch! I can't remember the last time I watched it and I can't believe I built my interest in musical theater in high school around the Phantom and RENT adaptations over this. I'm in love with the frame narrative, in love with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Gene Hackman and Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah's role is bigger than I remembered and I'm thrilled about it. Just the best!

The Quick and the Dead (1995) : I just remembered the reveal that comes right before the end and, god, what a blast. I watched this in a hotel room during an emotionally charged weekend, so the ways the movie builds and releases all kinds of tension with each character (why are they in this contest, are they gonna shoot, who's gonna win, what the fuck just happened) were extremely relieving!!! So cool.

The Boys in the Band (1970) : This will likely be my favorite watch of the year, in part because I don't know if I've ever felt spoken to this way before, even by other gay films I've found meaningful. It may not be possible to talk about it or my experience watching it without immediately getting into hyperbole. I'm extremely grateful to have seen it.

Broadcast News (1987) : Sooooo good at staying good the whole way through. Holly Hunter is unstoppable, Albert Brooks is maddeningly good, Joan Cusack steals the scene. It was solidly a great time to watch and I see no reason it won't be every other time I try to watch it!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) : I'm furious I took so long to see this. We owned it on DVD after it came out!!! But god, the way it presents the dilemma of adhering to principle vs. giving in to passion...it makes me want to weep. Chang Chen is also exactly as hot as he needs to be.

The Philadelphia Story (1940) : Just realizing this is the third love-triangly movie on this list........Must be a particular kind of year for me. Go watch Katharine Hepburn get ripped to shreds by every other person in this movie, it's like watching a strongman bend a car seeing her endure.

Honorable Mentions :
Burning || The Hudsucker Proxy || After Hours || Millennium Actress || Breaking Away || Lady Snowblood

Gay Erotica Honorable Mention:
Under the Rain
