Just a leopard from Seattle who sometimes makes games when she remembers to.
It reminds me of a great thread I read from a friend years ago about how their job helping homeless people required them to constantly clean bathrooms people often just left completely destroyed for "no obvious reason".
A coworker explained that it's something they just accept because when you have been without power and control so long as happens when you're unhoused, the smallest grant of it like being left to your own devices in a bathroom is intoxicating.
But the bathroom gets trashed, you clean it up, and afterwards they have usually worked it out of their system and it's fine.
And I think that same thing happens. You go from being on a big corporate site where you obviously know moderators don't give a fuck about you at best and find some people who are trying to do better and will actually listen and respond to try to make space for you.
That's definitely part of it, for some people!
And I think for others, they're just so cynical that they see even a fragment of the trouble they're used to on their "home" platform, and jump ship because they feel like the new platform is destined to have all the same problems with nowhere near the same userbase to justify putting up with them.
(What I'm saying here doesn't extend to people who've been particularly, severely harmed on new platforms in ways that they never were on legacy platforms. That's a whole different issue.)

there's value in staying and complaining about the things that bother you. that's what it takes to build a nice community. there's road bumps everywhere, so i might as well stay on a place i think my voice will be heard at least a wee bit. no hard feelings for the ones that don't wanna deal with that, it's a bummer, but... y'know. there's no perfect place
Yeah. Heck, that's why I'm even thinking of trying to be more consistent in posting on Mastodon, and probably getting my Weasyl back up and running? All these alternative platforms need activity and feedback.
yep, we can't expect certain places to not be full of assholes if we're not there fighting for space. totally understandable that some people don't want to do that, most often than not this takes a toll on you; but i wanna see this child grow nice and healthy under my care
unrelated: wish i could run my own masto instance, i honestly don't think it's all that bad there โฎโ (โ .โ ย โ โโ ย โ แดโ ย โ โโ .โ )โ โญ
