This is where fuel is made for non-electric cars and vehicles in Coelary. There aren't many of those in use, so one of these plants is enough for almost the whole city. A purpose-bred algae is grown in great vats before being processed and compressed into fuel. Coelary's fuel engineers have taken a geologic process that normally takes thousands of years and reduced that time down to mere weeks, and it produces enough fuel to exceed Coelary's internal combustion needs.

This plant is located a few miles south of Coelary, near a place with high geothermal activity, which provides both power and hot water to the plant.

in reply to @cwf's post:

Due to EM interference caused by solar storms and radiation storms, non-electric sources of heat and light are quite common. Fuel for use as a light source and for cooking is produced in this same type of plant. Trains and vehicles rated for cross-country travel must be fully operational with no electronics to prevent emergencies in case of sudden EM interference. Algae-derived liquid and gas fuel is as ubiquitous to them as AA batteries are to us.
