i keep seeing bad, disjointed, pointless horror games that rely entirely on cinematic lighting and jumpscares and all it does is makes me want to make a horror game. artists refer to this as The Spite Factor, and it can be a compelling impetus

in reply to @chirasul's post:

there are so many horror games made with a philosophy that could be boiled down to "i think it's funny when people feel unsettled!" and that's just not a whole lot to work with! i think it takes some real feelings and/or experiences to make horror worth engaging with. you gotta care about something

oh 100%! i think a lot of projects out there simply want to focus on the immediate audience response instead of making something that says or communicates an idea or practices craft, and unfortunately, that's also the kind of content that goes viral over and over and over again (though fortunately is hardly ever remembered). people often don't even recognize how little work is being put into those superficial 'horror' projects, just how much of them are just using massive premade asset bundles with zero modifications & banking on no one recognizing the lack of effort being put forth, presenting the illusion of a high-effort production as the only thing to sell the legitimacy of their 'scares' as a focused, laborious production. and it sucks.

i think horror has so much potential for communicating complex ideas & feelings in a truly visceral & captivating way, and offers some really unique opportunities for design, which makes the trend much more aggravating to me. there's a reason i keep bringing it up on my streams & keep trying to make game things around horror ideas lmao
