Our final episode of the 2023 Les Mis season is here! Juliet and Katherine dive deeper into the sadness, joy, and fantastic realism of the characters of Gavroche, Eponine, and Javert through the lens of Jorge Luis Borges' "The Shape of the Sword" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "It's Not Christmas Til Somebody Cries".

If you can't get enough Les Mis content, you can also check out our Winter 2023 bonus episode over on the Moonshot Network's patreon, where we dig deeper into the zany action comedy of things in the les mis book that don't make it into the award-winning musical.

Happy holidays everyone, and we'll see you all next year!

if you ever wanted to read the Jorge Luis Borges short story commonly called "The Shape of the Sword" or "The Form of the Sword", without needing to read, you're in luck! Here's the charming voice of Max Newland to read it aloud for us. It's great to listen to ahead of Saturday's discussion episode, or as a standalone snack!

If I am not mistaken, the heterogenous pieces I have listed resemble Kafka; if I am not mistaken, not all of them resemble each other. This last fact is what is most significant: Kafka's idiosyncracy is present in each of these writings, to a greater or lesser degree, but if Kafka had not written, we would not perceive it; that is to say, it would not exist. The poem "Fears and Scruples" by Robert Browning prophesies the work of Kafka, but our reading of Kafka noticeably refines and diverts our reading of the poem. Browning did not read it as we read it now. The word "precursor" is indispensable to the vocabulary of criticism, but one must try to purify it from any connotation of polemic or rivalry. The fact is that each writer creates his precursors. His work modifies our conception of the past, as it will modify the future.
