At 11am PST on 13 April (a week from today), I'll be streaming a rotisserie draft of my modern-era cube on twitch.tv/nex3! @ciswoman and I will be running commentary the whole day, through both the draft portion and the games. (If this intrigues you and you're impatient, you can also check out the previous rotisserie draft video.
What's a rotisserie draft?
For those who are unfamiliar, rotisserie draft is a long-form draft format for eight players. Each player is assigned a seat from one to eight, and in that order each player selects a card of their choice from the entire cube. Once all eight players have selected a card, the order reverses: seat eight selects a second card, then seat seven, and so on until everyone has two cards. This is known as "snake order" since it snakes back and forth. Once everyone has 40 cards, players build decks from the cards they've chosen and battle one another.
What's so cool about it?
Because players know their seats and the cube list is locked in a week ahead of time, everyone will be coming in with a definite plan. But the mind games are intense. Seat one has access to any card in the cube, but they have to wait through 14 other picks before they get a second card. Do they choose the best card in absolute power, or something that keeps them more open so they can react to the decks other people are choosing? Does seat eight take two cards that combo well together because they can get them both at once? When do you take powerful spells versus lands to make your mana function?
It's a fascinating interplay of planning and thinking on your feet, prioritizing what you need most versus what you think other players will take from you. It's also, in my opinion, the most fun you can have spectating a limited event in Magic: the Gathering.
Can I draft next time?
If you're interested in getting in on the next roto event, feel free to post a comment here or send me an ask with your Discord @ and I'll loop you in.
