question for kobolds:

ive seen doggy interpretations of kobolds and lizardy interpretations of kobolds. im assuming kobold designs are up to the artists discretion if theyre just like making up guys??? i'd probably draw them like i did this one drawing of aubrey from marielda

of course then there are the kolbats/kobats/batbolds too

in reply to @citriccenobite's post:

yeah "kobold" is kinda like "gremlin" in that the folklore wasn't really consistent with their physical description, just their behavior, plus there is a dog-like critter in Japanese folklore that is often translated to "kobold" which, to my understanding, is where a lot of the "they're kinda like dogs" thing came from

so yeah the physical depiction can be anywhere on the dog/lizard spectrum so long as they have critter energy

Historically it's just another name for trickster spirits, in fact "kobold" and "goblin" are the same word after dialect drift. D&D wanted to distinguish them (for a thicker monster manual I guess?) and originally made them dog people, which still has lasting influence in a lot of places; then in 3rd edition they decided to spice a lot of things up and turned kobolds into distant cousins of dragons. (It'll actually be another three years until they've been that way longer than the dog version!)
