hey everyone. we got a twofer this week! last week we were dealing with an unexpectedly flaky update and, after braving Hurricane Idalia successfully, jae’s power got knocked out by a regular-degular thunderstorm a couple days later, so getting everyone in the same room at the same time to do a patch notes post didn’t happen. here’s what’s new since we last spoke:

  • tag silencing!
    • #statistical analysis have you feeling down? do you feel your soul rot away each and every time you see inferential analysis on the TL? just browsing #statistics for fun facts and not all that weird math stuff? we finally have the solution to this common problem. add a tag to your silenced tag list and you’ll never see a post with that tag again.
    • this joins the existing feature of tag muffling, which lets you hide posts with a certain tag behind a clickthrough. you can access both of them from your settings page!
  • we published a brand new directory of awesome third-party tools you can use to improve your Posting experience.

  • largely rewrote how the bookmarked tag feeds are generated to fix serious performance issues
    • we got some reports that loading some users’ bookmarked tag pages was timing out, and discovered that if you had certain tags bookmarked or a particularly large number of pages blocked, the performance characteristics which had seemed okay to us in development were very much Not Okay.
    • in fixing the performance for those users, we found a couple improvements we could make that would significantly improve the performance for everyone, on just about every page that contains a list of posts. colin posted some more details if you’re really curious.
    • while deploying this change we discovered and fixed a bug that, in rare circumstances, could cause a ~20-minute delay in performing background tasks like publishing posts or adding or removing posts from your timeline if you followed/unfollowed someone.
  • fixed an issue with composing tags with an Input Method Editor (mostly in languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), and also the way the cursor behaved if you tried to add text in the middle of an unsaved tag.
    • we had fixed this issue over a year ago, but it reappeared unintentionally about a month ago when we were fixing another bug with the tag composer.
  • we believe we’ve removed another source of unexpected logouts
    • we think our cache server’s key eviction policy was interacting poorly with the particular combination of login sessions and less-important cached data, so we’ve moved the login sessions to their own store where they won’t be competing for space.
  • and as for a change that currently affects no one but me (aidan): finished converting all our figma styles into variable design tokens. you have no idea how nice it is to have booleans in here now!
    • figma bools lol gottem

things are still truckin along on everything else, and now that some of the big performance issues have been resolved we’re able to work on some more Features. see you in a week! same eggbug time, same eggbug channel. :eggbug:
