daily knowledge: mario fabbrini, a croatian man who emigrated to the united states and settled down in michigan, ran a frozen pizza company during the mid-20th century. at its height, he produced 45,000 pizzas in a week, but tragedy struck in 1973. tests conducted by the FDA showed that botulism causing bacteria was present in a batch of his company's pizzas and he was ordered to recall them. thus, he held an event now known as the Great Michigan Pizza Funeral, where he ceremoniously buried over 29,000 of the frozen pies. despite his village's population of only 1,800 people, hundreds of people attended the ceremony, including the governor of michigan.
