I remember wondering what it was gonna be like when, someday, the web of early twitter and Facebook would die and be replaced by something else. I figured at the time this would be because it would be supplanted by something better, but it’s actually just all falling apart because it was always unsustainable in the first place. Kind of a bitter pill to swallow for someone who, in my naïveté, thought the 2005-2015 web was things getting better and not worse.

All the venture capital money is drying up as they realise they're rapidly approaching the runway end marker lights and still haven't managed to get off the ground yet. And we're going to be left with more smoking craters where there used to be portions of conversation, and whatnot.

It's kind of sad to see Web 2.0 die at what is seemingly a very quick rate as the biggest services (Reddit, Twitter) try to maximize revenue while smaller services are getting shut down. While I hope smaller services can get off of the ground, (for example this site, things like https://tildes.net) I'm pessimistic about it.

I honestly fear that at this current point services will necessitate being profitable, which means them being paywalled behind monthly subscriptions or with insane amounts of advertising.
