Frankly I’m surprised people don’t mask in public routinely when not difficult for selfish “I’d rather not get sick” reasons. For me it’s way easier to cover part of my face than have a cold like a combined 2-3 weeks in a given year

and like,,, you don't even have to be super adamant about it! literally just masking at stores and on public transport (and like obvious high risk things like doctors offices) is gonna give you and everyone around you decent protection compared to not doing it at all

yeah that's always my main shibboleth: the main risk calculus decision i get frustrated with is one where there's nothing that wearing a mask prevents you from doing. like with indoor dining at least there's the argument of this is something i literally cannot wear a mask to do, but with examples like you mentioned...what's the relative advantage to having your maw exposed other than the relative annoyance of wearing a mask (similar to me to wearing a belt or socks)

also i think the main thing that made people stop masking was implicitly knowing they wouldnt get yelled at for NOT wearing a mask (as i got very used to doing during the mandate when working retail)
