this is hard to explain, but there’s a certain alarm bell that goes off in my head whenever i hear someone whip out the term “porn addiction” uncritically. i want to ask them: when and by whom were you taught that “porn” is something you can be “addicted” to? what were their motivations in telling you this? did you ever try looking it up yourself?

i used to believe it was a real thing? but more in the type of way you can become dependent on melatonin supplements and not in the "it turns you into a souless husk" thing that people who invented the term seem to think it does.
seeing those people definitely made me discard the whole idea outright.

I guess my take is that porn is not “addictive” but some people do get themselves twisted into knots from shame and develop an unhealthy relationship/outlook around porn where they continue to engage with it even though it makes them feel bad, which if not “addiction” then at least is still a Problem of some description that they need help with (except ideally that help should be with reframing how they think/feel about porn rather than an internet surveillance “accountability” app or banning porn or whatever).

Definitely any headlines / talking points about “porn addiction” are deeply suspect though.

90% of the time I hear "porn addiction" it's either in a courtroom or from someone caught cheating on their partner, like the guy in Ohio that kept three women trapped in his house for a decade told the court he had a porn addiction, mfer do you have a kidnapping addiction because if not then this doesn't mean anything

The US board of psychologist refused to add porn addiction to the book, saying there is no such thing. The world organization do have an entry but with a big note like human are all freaks and most sexual behavior are perfectly normal so keep your moral out of ths diagnostic.

Personnally, I think it's fear mongering. I spend years with high libido, these days I have high and low with absolutely no side effect. I do have a caffeine addiction. I drink a lot of coffee at work, not so much at home but if I spend mors than a day without caffeine, I get headache. Like a clockwork. Drinking a cup of coffee and waiting half an hour fix it. That's clearly withdrawal symptom and not simply a crave because there is this nice thing that make my body feels good and I'm understimulated

I got absolutely dogpiled recently for saying its not real lmao, by a bunch of TEENAGERS. bro I don't want to argue about porn with you you're like 14.... of course you think porn addiction is real you're still in the "sex is gross" phase
