this is a slide from Tanya Short's GDC talk about how KitFox games moved to a 4 day work week and i'll be thinking about it a lot.
thanks for posting this! the biggest culture shock i encountered when i started doing remote contracting work for US-based studios was the realisation that all of them think that way and they don't even see the problem with it. it's a deeply unhealthy and unfulfilling way of living, so it's a huge relief to see that there's at least one exception out there.
the country i live in (the uk) isn't exactly great either, but yes US work culture is on a whole other level. i had no idea why so many US companies offered "unlimited" vacation time or what that even meant, until i figured out that those companies all think that no one should be allowed to take a vacation in the first place unless they're too exhausted to continue working. i mourn for the lives that go unlived because they've decided that it's really important to work on a videogame for 50 weeks a year instead of 46 weeks a year, or 5-7 days a week instead of 4 days a week. i figured out i was trans shortly after i stopped doing contract work for studios over there, and i can't help but wonder how much earlier that would have happened if i hadn't spent the preceding five years just working and recovering from work.
uh, all that to say that i hope more US game studios follow kitfox's lead when it comes to this stuff. it genuinely does seem like knowledge of healthy work/life balance is slowly starting to get better over there, so i hope it continues to do so.
I had a job where they told us "we don't say 'work-life' balance, because work is a part of your life!"

I have only worked at shit jobs for most of my life and work BECOMES life in places like that, you no longer exist as a human being and are constantly thinking about work and dreading work
just curious: when they set the 4 day work week, is it "4 regular days" or is it "4 days, but you still need to fill in for 40 hours during those 4 days?" because I've seen the latter and it feels like missing the point entirely
this being KitFox I'd imagine (and hope) it's four regular days!
i'm pretty sure it's 4 8 hour days, or 32 hours. but during the talk employees mentioned they'd have to take a substantial pay bump to leave, and even then. Some people wouldn't even trade their dream jobs for a 4 day work week.
At my last job after being acquired they were on the verge of laying us off, and due to the low amount of new work I opted to take a 4-day work week. It made things so much less stressful (for the rest of the time I kept my job)
