- Will you be over 18 on the 4th of May 2023? The age is 16 for some elections in Scotland and Wales, but I don't think there are any this year.
- Is there an election in your area? Check the electoral commission's page if you're not sure. I think they're all local council elections and mayoral elections, but do check. That should also show if you have a by-election coming up in your area.
- Are you registered to vote? If you're unsure, you can check by contacting your local council or you can reapply to be certain. Register here. Registration closes on Monday the 17th of April at 11:59 PM UK time. If you have changed address since you last voted, you will need to update your registration.
- Do you have ID? The government passed the awful Elections Act 2022 last year, meaning that you now need a form of photo ID to vote. Here's the list of accepted photo ID. Your ID must look like you, and have the same name as your name on the electoral register. You are allowed to use expired ID, as long as it is one of those forms and it meets those requirements. If you do not have any accepted form of photo ID, you can apply for free for a Voter Authority Certificate. If you live in Northern Ireland, there are different photo ID rules.
- Also look at what you need to do if you'd like to vote by proxy or by post. You cannot vote in local elections if you live abroad permanently.
- Also, you could stand for election for your local council. You have until 4PM on Tuesday the 4th of April, if you fancy it. It's free. Qualification guide.
