I was raised in more religious circles, and maybe the "wholesome" connotation was to imply that 'wholesome' media was spiritually healthy. In any case, usages like this (https://ajoyfueledjourney.com/15-squeaky-clean-wholesome-family-movies/ ) were what I was thinking of, where people use "wholesome" to refer things that are morally good, do not oppose your religious beliefs, don't condone or praise sinful behaviors.
