Born Astrud Evangelina Weinert, she sang the original English-language version. The song was originally written in Portuguese. So the story goes, during a recording session with the song's composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, saxophonist Stan Getz and singer João Gilberto, they decided to make a version in English. João's then-wife, Astrud, volunteered to sing it, because she could speak English, despite having never recorded any music before.
The recording won the Grammy Award for record of the year, and was massively popular around the world. She would have been iconic just for that, but she had a huge career afterwards, despite not being credited on the original dual-language Brazilian/English version. What a story! What an artist! What a song! What an icon! RIP
