This year I've been trying to post more opinions. Not because I think I have good taste or anything, but because I want to be able to look back and judge myself. Consider last year's Benidorm Fest: my favourite was No Nos Moverán by Meler. I still like the song, but would I even put it in my top 5? We'll all find out when I write a post with my 2023 Benidorm Fest faves. This year I've listened to them all a few more times than I did last year, but I still reserve the right to change my mind.

  • Zorra by Nebulossa - Now I know why there's never been a female reboot of Zorro. I was not expecting much from Nebulossa after finding out they didn't get past the audition stage for Una Voce per San Marino which, and I cannot overstate this, had more than 100 semi-finalists. But Zorra's pretty good! It's definitely following in the footsteps of my absolute fave Nochentera from last year; Nebulossa's whole thing is 80s-style synth-pop, every night is noche ochentera for them. And it's got some good moments where you can shout "zorra zorra zorra!" which I love. I'd be interested to hear a version where the energy of the vocals is more congruent with the instruments, please someone else cover this song thank you.
  • Caliente by Jorge González - Last year there were a lot of Chanel wannabes. She didn't win but the SloMo effect was felt regardless. Eurovision had its fair shares of dancing pop girlies who just couldn't capture her magic. And at Benidorm Fest, even some of the men had dance breaks. This year, from one of the writers of Famous Oberogo's La Lola comes this song, which is Male SloMo. It's got a fun tune, some random English, and Spanish that even I could translate. And I wouldn't be surprised if Jorge shows some skin. Yummy yummy...
  • Remitente by María Peláe - When the artists were announced I had a look into a few of them, and I was really hoping she'd bring a more accessible kind of flamenco compared to Blanca Paloma's Eaea from last year. This is still too much flamenco for me.
  • Brillos Platino by Almácor, Sé Quién Soy by Angy Fernández, Te echo de by Noan - I also looked into these, and was excited to hear their songs. But I don't really like any of them. Brillos Platino has grown on me a little, but it's not a winner.
  • El Temps by Roger Padrós - Great to see some Catalan representation. The song's just meh.
  • Shoutout to the Alt Gr key.
  • BESO EN LA MAÑANA by Dellacruz - I quite like this!
  • No se me olvida by Yoly Saa - I don't like this!
  • Bla Bla Bla by Miss Cafeína - I'm not sure if I like this? Maybe I'm just being seduced by a chorus I can sing along to?
  • Prisionero by Quique Niza, Me vas a ver by Mantra, amor de verano by Marlena - For completeness, I think these are all just fine. No strong feelings either way. I can't come up with something to say for every song, I don't know what I'm talking about!
  • HERE TO STAY by Sofia Coll - This is delightfully camp. The gag of the season. It's not my favourite, that's coming soon, but I think this would create a great moment in the middle of Eurovision. I need more people to react to the part where she starts speaking English. I gasped!
  • Astronauta by Lérica - This is probably my most listened song from this Eurovision season so far? It gets me in the mood![For what?] I do think it might live or die on the staging. There's a substantial instrumental section, and it could be a bit awkward.
  • Dos Extraños by st. Pedro - This is not at all what I was looking for, but I think it's my favourite at the moment? It's just so sweet and sad and beautiful. I think this could do really well.
