Out of Minnesota, 3,000 union workers affiliated with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 663 have tentatively won raises of $2.50 to $3.50 an hour by spring 2024 after threatening a two-day strike against their employer, UNFI, who owns 33 Cub Foods locations in the state. They'll vote Tuesday (April 11) on whether to ratify the agreement.
Threats of a strike, according to the Minnesota Reformer, began last month, after the labor contract for Local 663 expired; this was the first series of negotiations between the two parties. According to Racket, Local 663 workers staged demonstrations to raise awareness of their disputes with UNFI prior to this strike vote. While workers and UNFI came to agreement on most issues, UNFI refused to meet the union's pay demands. The union asked for $4/hr pay increases for full-time workers, and $2.50 to $3/hr pay increases for part-time workers; UNFI's maximal offer was $2.75/hr increases for full-time workers, and nonspecific raises for everyone else.
300 part-time workers will also receive full-time status under the agreement, and a new safety committee will be created.
