According to UNI Global Union, workers in South Korea have begun the process of organizing a union at Google Korea. This comes following Google's parent company, Alphabet, announcing at least 12,000 layoffs among its global workforce–Google Korea workers recently received word that some of these layoffs would come in their division.
UNI reports that this new Google Korea union "plans to organize hundreds of workers at Google Korea and Google Cloud Korea to protect labour rights at the company." More specific numbers from The Korea Times indicate the union consists of about 850 employees, with 680 workers from Google Korea and 170 staff from Google Cloud Korea.
Its decision to affiliate with Korea Finance & Service Workers Union (KFSWU), which is under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), is fairly straightforward, according to UNI. They write that "KFSWU already has members at Oracle, Hewlett Packard, SAP, and Microsoft Korea. Google Korea workers union will be the fifth multinational IT or tech corporation organized in Korea."
