Teamsters Local 396 set what could be a very big precedent in California today: it has successfully unionized 84 contracted Amazon delivery drivers, in an apparent "historic first".
According to Local 396:
The 84 workers won neutrality and voluntary union recognition to join Local 396 in Los Angeles. Local 396 and Joint Council 42 negotiated a tentative agreement with Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner (DSP), Battle-Tested Strategies, on behalf of the new members.
These workers have also won what is apparently a very significant contract, with "immediate pay increases, substantial hourly raises in the fall, provisions that hold Amazon accountable on health and safety standards, a grievance procedure, and other benefits". More details are sure to come as the agreement is ratified. But arguably the bigger news by far is that they won this at all, and even did so voluntarily and with neutrality from their contractor. Unionizing even small chunks of Amazon's employees or contracted/sub-contracted workforce have made for astonishingly difficult work; and no doubt there are other workers in the wings who see this as the rare opportunity it is.
Hopefully, more unionization efforts in this space are forthcoming now that the path has been demonstrated!
