After seven days of negotiations between the Oakland Education Association and Oakland Unified School District fell through, OEA has gone on strike this morning.
As of Wednesday night, it seemed a deal between the parties was within reach for the first time in the negotiations. As reported by Oaklandside:
By 4 p.m. on Wednesday, OUSD had released an update saying, “After six full days and nights of contract negotiations with the Oakland Education Association (OEA), we believe that a deal with our Teachers’ Union is within reach.” OEA posted on Twitter shortly before 5 p.m. that the “team is working hard to reach an agreement.”
However, whatever progress was made appears to have fallen through and fallen victim to time constraints. The last public proposals between the two sides—particularly on the matter of pay, a particular motivator for the strike—also suggest there are still significant gaps between OEA and what OUSD is willing to offer: raises of 23% remain OEA's proposal, while OUSD is now offering 13-22% raises.
As far as impact on the schools themselves: students will be able to attend schools, at least in the immediate future, but they'll be operating in a modified capacity. Striking teachers, meanwhile, will be picketing schools in the morning. They intend to rally at city hall later today:
