On the heels of the Conde Nast walkout and an unfair labor practice strike at the San Antonio Report, two new journalist walkouts are taking place this morning. Forbes Union is walking out for three days; the New York Daily News Union is walking out for one. Although I'm not sure either is really targeting the Cohost demographic, both publications should be treated as active picket lines.

The Forbes Union walkout is motivated by stalled negotiations and is the first in that publication's history; although Forbes unionized well over two years ago (in July 2021), no contract has been finalized because Forbes refuses to bargain in good faith. As of today and in addition to the walkout, Newsguild is officially taking them to the NLRB on charges of "interference with protected union activity, discrimination based on protected union activity, and refusing to bargain in good faith."

At the New York Daily News, the walkout is in protest of Alden Global Capital, its hedge fund ownership, and further proposed cuts to the paper. This is a similar refrain to many journalist protests in the past few years: Alden has made serious cuts at the Daily News to claw even the smallest profits at the expense of quality. Newsguild reports here that "since the spring of 2022, 27 people have left and the Guild-represented staff now totals 54 people," while the Daily News Union further reports that remaining staff are often working overtime to provide sound coverage.
