Dining workers at Smith College, a Massachusetts private liberal arts college for women, won their union election almost unanimously yesterday! Despite the low vote totals (only 139 workers were eligible in the election) this union actually covers more than 400 workers at the college. It went public in November of last year and asked for voluntary recognition from the College, but that was denied. Major concerns for the union were inconsistent safety standards due to the lack of a standardized training program; the positions being paid minimum wage and hour restrictions of eight or ten hours a week; and mistreatment from managers.

A bonus side consequence with the win is that Smith College becomes even more unionized—according to OPEIU, "Full-time dining and housekeeping workers at Smith are already unionized as members of SEIU Local 211, while facilities staff belong to SEIU Local 263. Student workers across campus also show strong union sentiment and student HCAs (House Community Advisors) recently won their union election in December."
