In 2013, I drove two hours north with my Dad to Walker Pass Campground, a Bortle 3 location in the Sierra Nevada along the Pacific Crest Trail. The goal was to set up my telescope and do some astronomy unimpeded by the light pollution of my suburban night sky back home.

At a Bortle 3 location, the night sky appears crowded with stars, extending from above to the horizon in all directions. There are so many stars that the constellations, as youโ€™re used to seeing them under a more urban night sky, become harder to locate. If you know where to look, you can make out the blotchy glows of nebulae and star clusters with your naked eye.

It was overwhelming. Easily the darkest, richest night sky I've ever witnessed.

Astronomy has always been an almost religious experience for me. It combines a lot of my scientific and creative interests where I can reflect on life and be at peace with the world. It grounds me, connecting me with the happenings of late night nature all around me and with the cosmos beyond.

Find your own dark skies!
