The fan-made "Morton-Jankel Cut", by the folks at smbmovie.com, includes many deleted establishing scenes that make the film a lot easier to follow, and even includes the payoff of a few jokes for which the final release only includes the setup. It can be found on archive.org and is probably more worth your time than whatever Nintendo is making now.

Also, if you didn't know, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the husband-and-wife co-creators of the film, were also the co-creators of Max Headroom in the 80s.

Shiiiiit I need to watch this cut, I didn't know about it. Over the last decade I've gone from watching it as a "funny-bad '90s game movie" to genuinely loving it. The turning point for me was showing it to a friend who'd never seen it, and when they get in the car chase he's just casually like "Ah, so all the cars are electric because they never invented fossil fuels" and I was 🤯

there's so many silly little details packed into this thing. like when i was watching it as a kid i definitely didn't pick up on the Funiculì Funiculà motif in some of the music (y'know, because they're Italian,) so i definitely had a few mind-blown moments revisiting it as an adult too :p
