  • The Biden administration officially said it does not support gender-affirming surgeries for trans minors this week. The administration’s about-face on medical rights came after news reports that Admiral Rachel Levine had lobbied WPATH to remove proposed lower age minimums for specific surgeries from its updated guidelines on gender-affirming care -- ironically, because Dems believed that lowering the age floor would lead to conservative backlash. As I reported last week, research indicates that most gender-affirming surgeries in the U.S. are chest procedures performed on cis boys, not trans youth.
  • You've probably heard that the U.K. has a new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer -- a longtime Labour centrist who, in the weeks leading up to yesterday's election, has made increasingly trans-hostile remarks to the press. Starmer's Labour manifesto promises a trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy and gender recognition reform, but Starmer has since voiced opposition to "gender ideology" in schools, said trans women "should not have [the] right" to use women's bathrooms, and expressed a desire to meet personally with J.K. Rowling as PM. Thankfully, several TERF candidates lost their races -- and in Joanna Cherry's case, the seat she'd held since 2015. Kelly-Jay Keen, aka Posie Parker, only scraped together 196 votes, meaning she won't even get her deposit to stand back from the government. (Incidentally, I was today years old when I learned that UK candidates have to pay a refundable deposit in order to stand for election.)
  • ARTS SECTION: Indya Moore will officially play Wanda in Sandman season two, just as I predicted last year when set photos leaked of her holding a copy of The Marvelous Land of Oz. In a wild twist of fate, Netflix's announcement occurred on the same day two women publicly accused Sandman writer Neil Gaiman of sexual assault.

I'll be off work next week for a bit of a vacation, so expect the next roundup somewhere around 7/19.
thanks for reading tgirl journalism!
