Which was short for emote icon
Because emotes were the stuff made from text characters like :) and D: and so forth.
And then for reasons my memory isn't good enough recall, the library of tiny images came to be, with all the symbols and stuff. Icons, like they are found in other places, and then the fights over standardization began.
