I am not in these places

everyone please read and/or watch Dead Dead Demon's DeDeDeDe Destruction. beautiful glistening psychic lance of a series about very very normal young women trying to get by and live their lives in the face of the mundane inhumanity of society layered over the imminent end of the world. it hurt to read but it was a good, warm hurt. a hurt that connects, because we all hurt, don't we? even as things keep getting darker, even now, you and I will keep living. let's do our best out there. even if we can't save the world, even if we can't even save one little website, let's keep living. that's DDDD. check that shit out

PHEW, buzzer beater, I meant to post this when I finished it last month and I would've been sad if I hadn't gotten it out there

well I just finished reading Haikyu!! and my god that comic is fucking incredible. I know there is not a lot of time left on this website to discuss Haikyu!! with but feel free to yell in the comments here. if I had to name three things published in Weekly Shonen Jump that actually deserved the hype it would be Dragon Ball, Hunter x Hunter and Haikyu!!

genuinely I cannot think of anything I would rather do in the final hours of a social media website than holler at people about the thing I just read. I'm sort of like anju and kafei but for reading things. just a little apocalyptic humor between me and you

but seriously, I've thought about it and I don't really have much more of a heartfelt send-off for cohost than: just using it

@Lilli asked:

Is there anywhere you'll still post? I unironically love to see your posts, especially you talking about neat games you find.

I kept starting to answer this and it kept turning into a longer ramble about how I felt about cohost and social media and how it fit into my life and then the ramble kept getting away from me and I guess I don't know how to write everything I'm feeling at the moment. so I won't today, and just keep it short instead [I have now typed this out in full and am circling back to where I said I'd keep it short. this is what "short" looks like I guess lmao]

THE SHORT ANSWER
kind of nowhere! I don't really want to go back to my main twitter unless I need to beg for money suddenly and none of the alternatives really appeal to me. I'm not sure Social Media as it made sense to me in 2015 makes sense to my life now

For Now:

  • I'm here until they lock the doors
  • maybe I'll start a blog? mayyyybe? just for the sort of rambles and little bits I used to do here. but for various life reasons I'm probably not getting it set up, say, this week
  • I still, technically, own the twitter account coolranchzaku. if I started a blog, which I kinda wanna do but didn't in time for cohost shuttering, that's probably where I would mention doing that. can't miss it it'll be the first post on there in a billion years
  • if you, yes you the general audience of followers reading this post and not just the specific asker, want to chat with me about basically whatever, feel free to add me on discord at strangelittlevine, discord for better and worse is the closest thing to "social media" in a post-cohost world that fits into my life. I'm a scatterbrained wallflower so I am, frankly, already active in about as many discord servers as I am probably ever going to be but I am always down to chat in DMs. like, within reason. please everyone don't make me regret posting my discord in the clear in public I'm absolutely nobody

Sunless Skies is currently free on EGS and please for the love of god play Sunless Skies

ideally Sunless Seas, but, y'now, that one's a tall ask with how fucking jank it is

i would give away internal organs to make the Sunless games popular enough to be able to have conversations about it on the regular

please play Sunless Skies

fly a space train. go to a sanitarium to have devils clean your filthy soul. piss off bees the size of a ford focus. kill a sun. eat your crew. pet an inadvisably big dog. go to hell. go to the other hell. no, the OTHER other hell. fly past the ruins of the Great Clock of Westminster. go mad. don't stare at the sun. you'll turn to glass.

I could go on and on about the astonishing stuff that happens up in the high wilderness but I think the most important thing to say about Sunless Skies, the thing I love most, is the pace of it.

Sunless Skies is a game where you spend a long time flying from one place to another, and the places are where the story happens but you only get a little bit of it at a time at any given place, usually. so you pull into a port for the third time after tugging on little teasing strands of story the first couple times, and this time someone leans in your ear and whispers the absolute worst thing you've ever heard, or you learn some horrible truth about the world that you can't bear thinking about too hard.

But unfortunately for you, that's all you have left to do in this port right now. you sell your cargo, you buy some fuel and food, and you take off for your next stop. and there are some pretty views along the way and occasionally some other special stories but mostly there's the flying across a long, darkening sky. unfortunately, there is nothing to do but to think about it, that horrible thing you just heard. you marinate in it and it marinates in you, and in the absence of definitive answers (the game prefers the questions) you have to slowly decide for yourself how you feel about things like "the human on your crew who once wasn't" and "the plant that drinks regret" and "every star radiates law and hierarchy" and "the barrel of raw unprocessed time sitting in your hold that makes you weep to stand near" and "a really pathetic circus"

and then your meditative state breaks because hovering right outside the next port is a long thin Monitor class engine full of Ministry of Public Decency inspectors and it starts lining up its massive railgun on you so you have to stop thinking about things and instead race up aside their long flank and unload your gatling gun into it until everyone aboard stops moving. and you board the ruins and crack open the contraband safe and find a jar full of fermented starlight and you say "fuck yeah"

and then you dock in the new port where someone tells you the saddest, bleakest thing you've ever heard, and so forth. and you just think about it, and you find a way to go on living having heard it, and you still smile and laugh despite knowing it. and that's the way the game goes. please play Sunless Skies, it's so good
