hmmmm, depends on what you liked about witch from mercury I guess? I watched stuff order of release while listening to the Great Gundam Project and would certainly recommend checking out the original Mobile Suit Gundam (and Zeta, and ZZ, and Char's Counter Attack), alternatively Iron Blooded Orphans is one I enjoyed a lot (but haven't watched to completion)

if you wanted to dive into gundam as a whole, the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" (aka 0079) is a good place to start. but if you just wanna jump into a real good one off the bat, Turn A Gundam is my absolute favorite.

Turn A, but it is very much in conversations with the Gundam series (and Tomino's previous works) to get the full effect of. It's still one of the best animes to ever been made though.

0079 is just a good show and worth watching on it's own.

If you want to check out other stuff in greater mecha genre or something that has similar themes/stuff like G Witch then here's some suggestions that aren't gundam:

  • Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982) - It's got cool mechs, a very well constructed love-triangle, and fighting aliens with the power of pop music.
  • Ideon (1980) - Tomino's show after 0079. It's a bit darker than something like G Witch but has a lot of cool rainbow space magic.
  • Dunbine (1983) - Tomino's show after Ideon (technically there's Xabungle between them, but I don't know anything about it). It's a mecha isekai that has a lot more lighthearted and fun characters, though is still very much about war. There's a really fun mascot character named Cham who is a little fairy gal and is great.
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997) - one of the G Wtich staff worked on an adaptation of Utena (the novels I think?) so there's some lineage there. But here's what it is: Gay. Super Gay. and about growing up and understanding who you are. It's a phenomenal series and I highly recommend watching it and then the movie. No mechs but it does have the duels and school stuff of G Witch.
  • Birdie Wing (2022/23) - This is also Sunrise and was airing along side G Witch. It has a lot of gundam references despite being a show essentially about gay golf teens. There is so much to compare about the two thematically and I wouldn't even know where to begin. But if you liked G Witch but were like "what if it was more gay, had less robots, and more high drama" then you'll love Birdie Wing.
