I got fed up with windows' weird ui scaling on my 13 inch laptop, tried switching the resolution to 1600x900 and forgot I even did it until I had to watch a tutorial video recorded in 1080p with text too tiny to read

there's too many pixels now imo we should go back to like 1024x768

especially now that i'm starting to read some japanese, kanji are hella dense. though it also depends how far away from the screen you are -- ultimately it's about angular pixel density more than absolute resolution.

it also makes picture editing easier (though it's been a while since i've done any of that, i do intend to get back to it after the move)

i reckon 1080p is generally enough for stuff like movies and tv shows though. i think bitrate is the bigger limiting factor than resolution there

it looks nice when things are actually in 4K but in my experience I'm never actually looking at anything in 4K because we live in the age of streaming and I do not have infinite internet

in reply to @corhocysen's post:

For what I watch—mostly anime—it’s not useful, since almost all anime is areas of flat colour made at considerably lower resolutions. I can see the case for complex kanji, though, yeah.

yeah -- bitrate does matter a bit for anime because video codecs don't tend to be intended for sharp transitions in colour like that but even then there's diminishing returns. i don't think i really notice much beyond the sort of 1.5GB/hr mark.

otoh i have 16TB of storage and at this rate it'll be a while before i run into limits there, so it doesn't hurt either
